How to Know When Your Therapy Isn’t Working – And What to Do Next
Starting therapy is a big step toward caring for your mental health. But what happens when you’ve been showing up, doing the work, and things still don’t feel like they’re improving? It’s completely normal to hit a point in therapy where you start to wonder if it’s still working for you.
The truth is, therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process. It’s an investment of your time, energy, and money into yourself, and needs time to grow and develop. Just like relationships, it takes communication, reflection, and sometimes a reset.
Here’s how to tell when your therapy might need a refresh, why that happens, and what you can do to move forward with renewed energy and direction.

Signs Your Therapy Might Need a Reset
Not every session feels life-changing or like that “a-ha!” moment – and that’s okay. Progress through therapy comes with ebbs and flows. But if you’ve been feeling disconnected or stuck for a while, it could be time to pause and reassess your needs.
You might notice that:
- You regularly go into sessions with “nothing to talk about.”
- You leave sessions feeling frustrated, unsupported, or unheard.
- You’re not making progress toward your goals.
- Sessions feel repetitive or more like venting or chatting than healing.
- You feel like you’ve “outgrown” your therapist.
- Your therapist’s style or approach doesn’t feel like a fit anymore.
- You feel like your needs have changed since beginning therapy.
Therapy should help you feel supported and challenged in a balanced way. If you’re not feeling that way when your leaving your therapy sessions, it might be time for a check-in.

Why Therapy Plataeus Happen
A “therapy plateau” occurs when you experience growth and improvement when you first begin therapy, but progress stalls over a period of weeks or months. A plateau doesn’t mean therapy has failed – it typically means you’ve reached a point where something needs to shift within your therapy work.
Here are a few common reasons this happens:
- You’ve made progress in one area but haven’t updated your goals for what’s next.
- You’ve hit a deeper emotional layer and you may need a different therapeutic approach to deepen your work.
- Your therapist’s style or modality (for example, CBT vs Emotionally Focused Therapy) may not align with your current needs.
- External stressors, like work, relationships, or life changes, may be pulling your focus away from therapy progress.
A therapy reset can help you evaluate the reasons behind your plateau, reconnect with your growth so far, and recalibrate your sessions to be aligned with where you are now.

How to Reset and Reconnect to Your Goals
If you’re feeling unsure about your therapy experience so far, the best thing you can do is talk about it – openly and honestly – with your therapist. A good therapist will welcome that conversation. I frequently remind my clients: I can’t correct or shift something if I don’t know it feels “off” for you.
Here’s how to start:
- Reflect on what has been helpful so far and what hasn’t. Try to name specific examples.
- Revisit your latest treatment goals. What originally brought you in to therapy? What has changed since our first few sessions? What do you want to focus on now?
- Ask for a fresh approach. Perhaps CBT was an approach that worked well at the start of your therapy, but now you want deeper work. Talk to your therapist about alternate approaches they use, like EFT or DBT.
- Explore different therapy structures. Sometimes switching targets or formats (like individual vs couples work) can reignite progress.
- Consider whether a new therapist might be a better fit. It’s okay to make a change – your growth comes first. Your therapist can be a good therapist and not be the best fit for you right now.
At Keystone Therapy Group, we encourage clients to view therapy as a collaborative journey between themselvs and their therapist(s). Whether that means adjusting your goals, exploring new modalities, or even transitioning to another therapist, we’re here to help you stay on track toward the growth you deserve.

When to Consider Changing Therapists
Sometimes, you and your therapist might simply not be the right match – and that’s okay. Every therapist has a unique style, energy, and approach. If you’ve had honest conversations about feeling stuck and things still feel off, it might be time to explore other options.
Changing therapists doesn’t mean you’ve failed – it means you’re advocating for your well-being. At Keystone, our team includes a range of clinicians with different specialties and approaches, so we can help you find the best fit.
